Area information
Staying in charming Carmagnola, you will feel part of the town's fascinating Medieval and Renaissance heritage. Famous nowadays among food lovers for its pepper festival, it offers interesting opportunities for art and history enthusiasts:
The Church of S. Agostino in the Piazza S. Agostino was built between 1406 and 1437. It features a bell tower with a strong Gothic influence, an interior which incorporates Baroque elements and the present facade was restored in 1835.
Constituting the religious fulcrum of the town, the Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Piazza G. Verdi was built between 1492 and 1514 in a Romanesque-Gothic style.
Situated in the town's ancient quarter, the splendid Baroque synagogue at number 8 Via Bertini dates back to the second half of the 18th century.
There are also a number of museums such as the Civic Museum of Natural History at number 188 Via San Francesco di Sales, the Civic Naval Museum at number 10 Piazza Mazzini and the Hemp Ecomuseum at number 10 Via Crissolo.
The town of Racconigi boasts a reputation in Italy and Europe, most definitely due to its Savoyard castle given world heritage status by UNESCO. Built in the Baroque period, it was once the residence of King Carlo Alberto as well as the last kings of Italy. The complex is distinguished by its majestic architecture, period furniture and extensive collection of paintings. The grounds have an important ecological heritage and include a lake, the Margarina and the greenhouse, offering a fitting backdrop to the exquisite building.
Now for something more modern; the Mondovicino shopping centre is one of the biggest in Italy. It is 30 minutes from Carmagnola by the Torini-Savona autoroute at the Mondovi exit.
