Area information

Trastevere is an ancient district of Rome, formerly occupied by workers and families that lived there for generations. The distinct liveliness of this area can still be experienced every day in its unmistakable streets where locals shop with their families and leisurely enjoy the best Italian coffee with long time friends. Remarkable museums and churches are also abundant.

At night, Trastevere bursts with countless bars, coffee shops, art galleries, and designer shops open until late. Because of its trendy atmosphere, Trastevere is said to be an Italian counterpart to the Greenwich Village in New York City.

Trastevere means “on the other side of the Tiber”, and in ancient times was considered a suburb. Centuries later, it is set in the centre of a city that has grown immensely, right between the wonders of the historic centre, the Vatican City, and the upcoming districts of Testaccio and Ostiense. Within walking distance of major attractions and served by a variety of bus lines and a train station, Trastevere is a strategic base from which to explore all of Rome.
